Between Hoi An and Tra Que, a gentle immersion in Vietnamese rural daily life

Just a few minutes from Hoi An’s historic center, this half-day offers a distinct interlude, far from the bustle of the old alleyways and the more popular routes. By bike, you gradually reach the surrounding countryside as far as the vegetable-growing village of Tra Que, known for its traditional farming and its very direct relationship with the land. This experience is offered by our tailor-made travel agency, which designs discoveries as close as possible to the places and local encounters.

The experience is built around a simple, gradual immersion in everyday local life: riding through rural landscapes, discovering traditional farming techniques, a relaxing moment around the village’s plants, then a shared cooking workshop with a local family. Nothing is spectacular; everything rests on the accuracy of the gestures, the closeness to the residents, and the continuity between the land and the plate, during a trip to Vietnam.

A short but rich interlude, allowing you to discover another side of Hoi An—more intimate, quieter, and deeply rooted in its territory.

A leisurely ride to the village of Tra Que

The day begins with a departure from the hotel in Hoi An, where you meet your guide before setting off by bicycle towards the village of Tra Que. The journey unfolds gently, along paths that gradually leave the urban bustle behind to reach more open spaces, where the Vietnamese countryside fully reveals itself.

Very quickly, scenes of daily life change. Homes become more spread out, gardens appear, and crops set the rhythm of the landscape. The bicycle becomes a simple way to blend into this environment, without speed or constraints, giving your eyes time to adjust to this new world.

On arrival in Tra Que, the atmosphere is immediately calmer. The village is made up of small, carefully tended vegetable plots, where locals still work using traditional methods, without the use of electric machines. The welcome is simple, with a local drink offered as a first gesture of hospitality, before getting ready to step more concretely into village life.

An immersion in the village’s farming daily life

The immersion begins with a time for observation, followed by hands-on practice supervised by the villagers. Dressed in clothing suited to farm work, visitors discover the different stages that structure working the land in Tra Que.

You learn how to prepare the soil, enrich crops with natural fertilisers, plant young shoots and water the plots. Each gesture is explained simply, in a spirit of direct transmission, without artifice. Here, agriculture is based on age-old practices, where consistency and attention to the soil take precedence over speed.

As the experience unfolds, your relationship with the vegetables being grown changes. They are no longer just finished products, but the visible result of precise, patient daily work. This closeness to the land gives the activity a very tangible, almost educational dimension, while never losing its roots in the simplicity of the place.

After this time in the gardens, a break is offered in the form of a foot bath with the village’s plants. Prepared using local ingredients such as lemongrass, Dinh Lang leaves, citrus leaves and even wild betel, this moment of rest brings an immediate sense of release after the farm work. The warm water and plant aromas naturally extend the immersion in Tra Que’s world, this time in a more sensory dimension.

A family-style meal, the natural extension of the land

The last part of the half-day takes place around a cooking workshop shared with a local family. The connection to the land continues naturally: the vegetables seen and worked with in the gardens become the main ingredients of the dishes prepared.

Guided step by step, you discover how to make local specialities from Hoi An in a simple, friendly atmosphere. The aim is not culinary performance, but the passing on of everyday gestures and know-how. The kitchen becomes a place of encounter, where you learn as much by watching as by doing.

Once the dishes are ready, lunch is shared with the family, in a moment with no particular formality. Around the table, conversation flows naturally, carried by the simplicity of the meal and the very direct origin of the ingredients. Everything experienced since the morning finds an obvious continuity here, from the soil to the plate.

You then cycle back to Hoi An, in an atmosphere that is calmer still. The return route crosses the same landscapes, but your perspective has changed. The city gradually reappears, like a gentle transition between two ways of life.

We made a 17-days familly tour prepared by Prabath. We had various requests due our familly organization and Prabath has always been solution oriented, patient and very kind to propose alternatives which fitted with our expectations. Our guide Terrence is a very friendly and caring person who made everything possible to please us and show us the best of Sri Lanka. He is a very good driver and a very professionnal guide with large knowledges in fauna, flora, history, culture, religion. He shared a lot with us throughout our trip and visits and it was really part a of what we appreciated a lot. Beyond that, we are very satisfied with the respect of the sustainability certification : hotels and homestays, as well as visits, experiences of valuable local handicraft were in line with this commitment. If you wish to come in Sri Lanka and experience the best, we can only recommand to use the services offered by Atypique Voyages! We come back with hundreds of amazing memories from our trip. Thank you so much Atypique Voyages! 🙏🏻
